Discover the Fun of Skimboarding in Hilton Head

June 5th 2013

There are so many fun ways to enjoy the beach from surfing and cornhole to building sandcastles and swimming in the surf. One of our favorites, however, is skimboarding! We highly recommend it for all ages. It’s like skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding combined. It’s tons of fun and only requires one simple piece of equipment: a skimboard.

How do you skimboard? Let us give you a quick lesson on skimboarding in Hilton Head.

To start, be prepared to fall – a lot! Hold your skimboard in front of you with one hand along the back and one along the side. Wait until the wave is going out and there’s just a little bit of water left, maybe an inch. Start running and drop the board in front of you.

Now, here’s the tricky part. To properly get on a skimboard, you need to do it one foot at a time. While running, place your front foot about midways on the board and then place your back foot right behind it. Tip: Don’t jump on the board. That’s a sure way to end up splat in the sand J. This part takes some trial and error. Be persistent!

Once you’ve got the stepping on part down, bend your knees and pretend like you’re on a skateboard and “skim” until you stop. If you want to get fancy, you can try spinning or stopping short by putting your weight on your back foot.

You’re going to need a skimboard, of course, and we have plenty at Hilton Head Outfitters. We carry a selection of cool designs and a variety of sizes. Come on in and we’ll help you pick out the right skimboard!
