May is National Bike Month

With a temperate climate, you may be able to enjoy biking year round in Hilton Head Island, SC, but did you know that May is National Bike Month? Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, #BikeMonth is being celebrated in communities from coast to coast as a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encouraging more folks to give it a try.

Bike Month

With spectacular scenery, 12 miles of hard-packed “bike-able” beach, and more than 80 miles of bike trails, biking is a great way to get around Hilton Head Island. In fact, the town of Hilton Head Island is recognized as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFCsm) by the League of American Bicyclists. The Gold Level recognizes Hilton Head Island’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling.

Bike Paths on Hilton Head Island

The bike paths and streets of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort are ideal for biking, where motorists are bike-friendly and traffic is light. There is even a special passageway for bicyclists and pedestrians that allows safe passage to Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina without having to cross Hwy. 278. Learn more about our bike trails and view maps here.

Hilton Head Island Bike Safety

Bike Signage

While it may be easy to get lost in the beauty of the ride, with the increased amount of vehicular and bike traffic in the community, please use caution when driving (or biking!) to keep Palmetto Dunes safe for residents and visitors to enjoy. Please remember:

  • Cars have the right-of-way and bicyclists must yield to traffic.

  • Bicyclists must use bike paths.

  • Bikes ride to the right, pass on the left.

  • Bikes must use lights at night.
