5 Reasons Why Fall is Better on Hilton Head Island

Family biking on Palmetto Dunes

Summer’s blue skies, busy beaches, and hot temperatures are making way for crisp mornings and cozy nights here in the Lowcountry but don’t be fooled! Just because fall is here doesn’t mean the fun stops on Hilton Head! Here are our top five reasons why fall is better on Hilton Head Island.

1. SOME OF THE BEST FISHING OF THE YEAR

While we’ll always recommend a fishing excursion with Trent Malphrus at Hilton Head Outfitters, we’ve got to admit that fall fishing in Hilton Head is hard to beat. It’s spawning season for red fish and you’ll find thousands of them in the Palmetto Dunes Lagoon alone. Up your adrenaline by seeing if you can reel in a speckled seatrout — though they’re typically only around 12” this time of year, they’re hard-striking, tough-fighting fish that make for a memorable catch.

2. MUSIC & TASTE AT SHELTER COVE HARBOUR AND MARINA

Dance the night away with the 12th season of Music & Taste at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. Join us Thursday nights (weather permitting) from 6–9pm at the Neptune Statue and grab a bite from local restaurants, meet and greet some friends, and tap your toes to the musical stylings of local favorites like The Headliners and Deas Guyz.

3. OYSTERS GALORE

There’s a saying here in the Lowcountry that Oysters are at their best during the months that end in “r”. That means that September through December is oyster season here on Hilton Head Island, and we are ready to celebrate. Check out the Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival from October 12–20, 2019 for some incredible local seafood and cuisine, fun activities, and beautiful artworks.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Palmetto Dunes’ annual Oyster Roast at The Dunes House. This popular, mouthwatering event includes live music, food and drink specials, and the star of the show—oysters—for $20 per bucket. Can’t make it? Hold your own oyster roast at home.

4. FEWER CROWDS

Whether you’re beachcombing Palmetto Dunes’ three miles of beach or biking Hilton Head’s beautiful pathways, autumn means that you’ve got more space to roam and explore while still enjoying beautiful temperatures for outdoor activity.

5. TEMPERATE CONDITIONS

Speaking of, the weather at this time of year is perfect for getting outdoors and enjoying all of the natural beauty here on Hilton Head Island. Get out for a paddle or a boat ride and enjoy warm sun without summer’s humidity to slow you down.

What’s your favorite thing about fall on Hilton Head Island?
