The 11-mile lagoon system at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort on Hilton Head Island isn't just a scenic backdrop—it's a remarkable feat of engineering and environmental foresight that has become integral to the resort's identity.

A Visionary Solution to Coastal Challenges

In the late 1960s (learn more about the history here), Palmetto Dunes faced significant challenges: shallow waterways and an eroding beachfront. The 150-foot-wide beach was often too waterlogged at low tide and nearly vanished at high tide due to receding tides and ground seepage through the narrow dune zone.

To address these issues, the resort enlisted the expertise of Danish coastal engineer Dr. Per Bruun. His innovative solution involved dredging approximately 2 million cubic yards of sand to create an 11-mile saltwater lagoon system. The dredged sand was then transported to the beachfront and sculpted into 11-foot-high dunes, effectively widening the beach by 120 to 150 feet and elevating it by 4 to 5 feet.

Engineering Excellence and Environmental Harmony

The creation of the lagoon system was not only a response to environmental concerns but also a pioneering approach to sustainable coastal development. Tidal gates were installed to regulate water flow, allowing the lagoons to flush regularly and maintain water quality. This design helped preserve shoreline vegetation, reduce erosion, and create a tranquil environment conducive to wildlife habitation.

A Multifaceted Recreational Resource

Today, the lagoon system meanders through the resort's neighborhoods and golf courses, offering guests a unique opportunity to engage with nature. The calm, brackish waters are ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and catch-and-release fishing. The lagoons are home to a diverse array of wildlife, including turtles, alligators, and over 40 species of birds.
